Emerging from New Edition, Bell Biv DeVoe’s Poison (1990) turned three of the group’s most overlooked members into unlikely pop stars - and unlikely forerunners for the decade ahead. Blending New Jack Swing, R&B and hip-hop with production from Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad, the album anticipated the sound, attitude and pop artistry that would run through ’90s music - defined by their music philosophy: “mentally hip-hop, smoothed out on the R&B tip with a pop feel appeal to it.”
